Hasbro’s Star Wars Luke Skywalker Force FX Lightsaber Collectable with removable blade
I bought one and I couldn’t just stop there, I had to buy another… however it took me a little time to figure out which lightsaber I actually wanted to get, there are several choices and some of the choices are better than others. In the end I went for Luke Skywalker’s (though in reality it’s Anakin Skywalker’s, of course) A New Hope lightsaber, the very first lightsaber we ever see in Star Wars.
After spending a little time with it today, I’m so glad I ended up putting down the money for another one, I thought Darth Vader’s lightsaber was great… this one is exceptional.
After spending quite a lot of time with my Darth Vader lightsaber, I have begun to see the small things I would like improved, but at the time I’ve come to appreciate the level of quality that’s been put into these pieces for the price you pay. They’re not 100% accurate screen replicas but they’re a hell of a lot of fun to play with and look great when you display them up on your wall.
While Vader’s lightsaber, as mentioned in the previous review, is quite heavy, the first time I held Luke’s lightsaber I noticed how wonderfully light and easy to hold it was in comparison. Truly, the only person who can really wield Vader’s lightsaber is Vader himself since the weight and design is a lot better for a gloved cybernetic hand.
I spent the entire day doing my Star Wars kid thing with Luke’s lightsaber and had way too much fun while I was at it. This lightsaber is perfect if you want to go all out with your whole acrobatic twirling blue blaze of fury routine. Despite the looks, the blade is attached tightly to the hilt and you can’t feel any looseness at all. The hilt itself is mostly metal with some plastic parts too and of course, a rubber grip at the bottom of the same design found on Vader’s lightsaber.
The blade is a fairly bright blue, though it does seem a little easier to see the gaps in the LEDs on this lightsaber than it does on Vader’s lightsaber. I don’t know if this is because of the quality of the build or just because of the different frequency of the blue light being narrower than red light… who can say. The sound effects for this lightsaber, which come out from the speaker located at the butt of the hilt don’t seem to be as loud when compared to my Darth Vader lightsaber, but it’s still loud enough to be heard properly.
An interesting thing to note about wielding these lightsabers, there seems to be a trick to get them to make the correct sounds and the correct moments. The movement sound for example is difficult to pull off if you swing the lightsaber “incorrectly” and can sound off even if you’re sure you have the lightsaber steady. Once you figure out the sweet spot to activate the motion sounds you’ll be fine, but before that it’s going to take a bit of getting used to, especially when you light them up for the first time.
Another interesting thing to mention about these lightsabers is that they seem to have an automatic shut-off timer if the motion sensor doesn’t detect any movement for a certain amount of time, obviously to save the battery life since it’s only being powered by three AAA batteries. It’s a nice feature but you’ll have to make sure the ignition switch is set back to the off position when it powers itself down. Speaking of the ignition switch, the one on my Vader lightsaber is quite easy to switch to the on position, but with Luke’s lightsaber it’s actually a bit difficult because the switch is quite tight and takes a bit of effort to get into the on position with your thumb.
If you’re looking at buying a lightsaber and are interested in this one, there are a few things to tell you. Firstly, there are a few versions of Luke’s lightsaber and then another variant which is listed as “Anakin Skywalker’s lightsaber” which is from Revenge of the Sith and shares a closer resemblance to Luke’s lightsaber in The Empire Strike Back than it does to the one you see in A New Hope since the model they used changed between the two original movies for whatever reason. Additionally, there have been a few different variations of this lightsaber over the years from both Master Replicas and Hasbro. The one I have has a 2010 copyright on the butt of the hilt and is said to be the best version made by Hasbro as earlier versions weren’t as screen accurate… at least that’s what I hear.
These lightsabers aren’t cheap, but they’re worth the price and very fun to wield, especially if you have a large open space to go absolutely nuts. Just like with the Darth Vader lightsaber, I’m glad I took the plunge and bought it… but will this be my final lightsaber? I don’t know, I may or may not buy more in the future, but it really does depend on whether the ones I choose to purchase are screen accurate enough for my tastes. I’ve already decided that Luke’s Return of the Jedi lightsaber and Obi-wan’s A New Hope lightsaber aren’t worth buying since they’re entirely inaccurate from how they’re meant to be… but maybe I could get myself a complete Darth Maul staffsaber… who knows, we shall see.
